Residential Inspection Pilot Program Update

The Association has been working with the City of Albuquerque to help address the current backlog of residential roofing permit inspections. In many cases, inspections are delayed by several weeks, and due to current staffing limitations, the City is unable to add another drone operator at this time.

To help speed up the process, we have reintroduced CompanyCam as a tool for documenting residential roofing projects from start to finish. Working closely with Chief Building Official Deborah Rowley, we developed a standardized 14-point photo checklist that meets the City's inspection documentation requirements.

Important

This is a pilot program and participation is completely voluntary. It is not required to obtain a final inspection.

Contractors may still choose the City's traditional drone inspection process. However, digital photo submissions can typically be reviewed within days rather than weeks.

How It Works

  1. Document the project using the CompanyCam app.
  2. Photos are automatically uploaded to a secure cloud server.
  3. Generate a PDF report directly from the app.
  4. Attach the PDF to your final permit inspection request.
  5. Email Chief Deborah Rowley at drowley@cabq.gov to let her know the PDF has been submitted. She will assign an inspector for review.

For best results, include:

  • A photo of the front of the property showing the address.
  • GPS-enabled photos (CompanyCam can embed location data automatically).

CompanyCam Information

Our Association now has a dedicated CompanyCam representative: Alex Robertson

Alex is also available to host Zoom sessions covering:

  • Product demonstrations
  • Basic training
  • Questions and answers

CompanyCam currently costs approximately $1.00 per user per day, with a minimum of three users.

Why This Matters

Digital project documentation benefits more than just permit inspections. Many homeowners' insurance companies now require photographic documentation of roofing components—including skylights, ventilation, and fire-resistant materials—for homes in wildfire-prone areas. Having standardized digital records helps contractors, homeowners, and inspectors alike.

While CompanyCam is the platform we're using for this pilot program, it represents a broader move toward modern digital documentation within our industry.

Residential Inspection Photo Checklist

Please include the following documentation, as applicable:

  1. Roof edging (especially on overlay projects).
  2. Number of roof layers (show cut-out if overlay).
  3. Valleys and valley material installation.
  4. Fireplace flashing and counterflashing.
  5. Venting, compression bands, and sealant.
  6. T-patches.
  7. TPO or PVC membrane documentation.
  8. Parapet termination details (termination bar, parapet cap, wrap).
  9. Skylight flashing.
  10. Eave closures/bird stops on tile roofs.
  11. Roof slope or taper.
  12. Roof decking (when requested before roofing installation).
  13. Protective coating preparation and manufacturer installation requirements.
  14. Roof insulation verification where required for exposed wood ceiling assemblies.

Supporting manufacturer documentation may also be attached to the PDF.

Please Note

This pilot program currently applies only to residential permits. Commercial roofing inspections will continue to follow the City's existing inspection procedures.

We are encouraged by the progress of this program and hope it helps reduce inspection delays while modernizing the permitting process. If you have questions about the process, the tutorials are straightforward, and Alex at CompanyCam is an excellent resource for assistance.
